comic strip

Electoral dismay

Catharsis, pure and simple.

Of course I wrote this in response to the 2002 elections when voters handed everything back to the Republicans. I'm...pretty liberal. And this upset me enormously.

Most of the mail I got was positive, and that extends beyond the borders of people who agree with me. I even got some mail along the lines of "I'm a conservative, but I felt this way the last time the Democrats won it all, so you have my sympathies." Bonus points to those people for putting humanity above politics.

One guy wrote to me saying he would no longer be reading any strip written by someone who was "afraid of a Congress that would actually obey the Constitution." I can't honestly say I was upset. Some people on either extreme are going to fall away no matter what I do. Well, mostly the right exteme. Let's not kid ourselves.

But I think all of that is looking at it backwards.

I am the person drawing this strip. I was in pain. I channeled that pain and it ended up being a really funny strip (I think). That's successful art, not unsuccessful partisanship.

I think I did okay.
