'When retired schoolteacher Neil Preston and his wife Carol set out to build
their dream home in Victoria's Murray River region, they knew exactly what they
did not want.

"We both hate brick," Mr Preston said. "We looked at concrete panel but it was
like being in a morgue."

So the couple opted for hemp, a non-drug producing variety of the cannabis
plant.

Standing in the doorway of their nearly-complete house in Swan Hill — more than
a year since construction began — the Prestons say they are already reaping the
benefits.

"The other day it was 7 degrees [Celsius] outside; inside it was 21. This
morning it was 12 degrees outside; it was 21 inside," Mr Preston said.

"Heating and cooling costs will be very minimal in this house."'
