"When I tell people I study social media, politics and social movements, I
often get a version of the question: “But there were protests before
Facebook?”"

Good analysis. It's instructive to note that these mass protests are generally
fuelled by unresponsive government and media. They don't offer any means to
provide a better government and media in and of themselves, but the usual
response of increasingly brutal repression is unlikely to work in the long term
either.
