In Istanbul earlier this month, a retired forestry engineer decided to paint
the Findikli stairs all the colors of the rainbow --- an act of guerrilla
beautification.

What transformed this into a political issue: residents woke up to find the
stairs had been hastily repainted in their original color, a dark cement
gray, triggering a fresh ripple of anti-government protests —people across
Turkey took up paint brushes in solidarity.
