giving people an arbitrary advantage over their fellows at the beginning of an
endeavour led to a significantly better outcome for those people."

I suspect it's at least partly about overcoming people's reluctance to be the
first - and potentially the only - person to make their opinion about the
subject known. It's safer once you know at least one other person shares your
views.
