"After a desperately bad season, the Pacific Fishery Management Council
voted to immediately halt this year's sardine fishing, one of the most
important fish seasons in the country. What happened to all the sardines?"

Via Muse, who added:

I grew up for a time on the Washington coast. The fishers would
complain loudly whenever they were told they couldn't fish for
various reasons. Understandably, since this was their livelihood.
However, if you let people fish until no fish are left at all, no
fishing will be possible even if you were to remove the regulators.

Fish are an immensely useful part of the human diet. We over-fish,
no more fish. We don't make it possible for fishers to have a
regular livelihood, no more fishers. We make the world one where
everyone sinks or swims, then that is exactly what will happen...all
of humanity will sink.

We have to do a better job of supporting one another as a critical
part of supporting the environment that keeps us alive. Compassion
isn't for wusses, it's for survivors.

Cheers,
