"Studios invested heavily in magnetic-tape storage for film archiving
but now struggle to keep up with the technology"

Digital archiving is a big problem - you constantly have to carry
everything forward to new media. The best solution is to ensure archival
organisations (national libraries, the Internet Archive, etc.) have
copies of all works and are funded to preserve them.
