"Queensland’s trans and gender-diverse community will be able to change their
birth certificates more easily to reflect who they are under laws passed on
Wednesday night, despite opposition from the LNP.

The laws will allow what is already possible – changing the gender on a birth
certificate – with a key difference: a person will no longer be required to
have undergone the prohibitively expensive and difficult to access surgery that
many also do not wish to have.

People will also be given greater freedom to nominate the descriptor they use
instead of male or female, and include only a personal statutory declaration
and statement from a supportive adult they’ve known for more than a year,
rather than a medical statement.

Most other Australian states and territories have undertaken, or are in the
process of making, similar changes long sought by the community to ensure
people are not discriminated against or require medical intervention in
relation to their identity."
